Internet of Things

IP address highlighted in command prompt

Once upon a time, the Internet of Things was going to transform inanimate life as we knew it. Automobiles, Airplanes, TVs, Toasters and Refrigerators. IoT, besides the particularly important use case of protecting high value merchandise from disappearing along the retail supply chain, ended up as just a preview for the big idea, something we are calling IoAI – introducing the Internet of Artificial Intelligence.

Turns out, since everything is theoretically addressable, then perhaps everything should be. Tagging all nouns with an IP Address is not necessary – but that does not mean that big tech will not give it a shot. Even you are addressable. There are numerous pilots in progress, testing out the benefits of this gigantic identity and access management opportunity. With IoT, ersatz IoAI, there is more machine learning and more data to work with than ever before. Which leads to the very real problem of making sense of all that data and presenting it to people or machines for action.

On the backend of this you need Datacenter technology. The full spectrum of Information Technology Architectures will be required: centralized large scale deep computing, edge controlled high density distributed resources with minimal latency, and of course optimized micro computing on your site or on your personal cloud enabled device.

Rolling out of this new highly interconnected world will be messy and lumpy to say the least. It would be wonderful to start somewhere impactful, like better aircraft control, but that is probably not how this will evolve. More likely scenario is digital IT, starting at the local DMV. You thought a trip to the local driver’s license shop was fun before; just imagine the possibilities.
